The History of Roman Shades

It may not surprise you, given their name, that Roman shades date back to Ancient Rome. During archaeological excavations, a system of retractable fabric shades were discovered at the Coliseum. It featured draping folds of fabric, but extended outward, more like an awning than the vertical window coverings we know today. According to historians, these shades helped spectators avoid overexposure from the intense Mediterranean sun and could be adjusted when temperatures cooled later on in the evenings. Thread Count: How Important Is It?

Today, bedding options are endless. Whether a traditional brick and mortar operation or online store, they will likely have a wide variety of sheets in different materials, weaves, and quality levels. When it comes to buying sheets, thread count is often overvalued, but what does it actually mean and is it really the most important characteristic to look at? Thread count is determined by the number of threads per square inch of fabric, including both the horizontal and the vertical threads. Generally, a thread count between 200 and 800 is good, and the higher the number the softer the sheets will be. There is a lot more to a sheet than its thread count though, both in terms of quality and the feeling of the fabric.

Top Down Bottom Up Shades

Top down bottom up shades can be freely moved up or down to cover or expose any portion of a window. There are a few different mechanisms on the market, but the most popular is cordless and is moved up or down by tabs on the bottom and top of the shade. These new designs allow for an increased level of control over light, insulation, and privacy.
