When buying window treatments, the first step is always to measure the windows in your home. Some have it lucky, and have standard-sized windows throughout their home, or at least windows of the same size in each room. For many, this is not the case. Older homes present a number of challenges when it comes to fitting or sizing window treatments, but we are here to help.
Today, many homes are built with tall or vaulted ceilings. This is in part because having tall ceilings of 9 or 10 feet in height makes the space appear larger and feel more spacious. As a result, many big box and online stores primarily offer curtains and drapes in longer lengths, typically 84”, 96”, and even 108”. These sizes are terrific for homes with tall ceilings, but for those that don’t have this luxury it can make shopping for window treatments a challenge. The additional lengths of 45”, 54”, 63”, and 72” provide options for a wider variety of homes. Windows comes in many shapes and sizes, and we carry window treatments for all. The Ultimate Blackout Grommet Curtains are a great option for any ceiling height or window size. These simplistic and classic drapes are available in lengths ranging from 45” to 84” and a number of colors including: garnet, sage, blue, gray, ivory, and putty. Since these curtains are available in such a range of sizes, they allow you to fit windows of different sizes in different length panels while maintaining a cohesive look. For example, if the base of one of the windows in your living room is obstructed by a chair or sofa, you could fit this window with shorter curtains, while the rest of the windows have floor length panels. In this situation, you could also opt to fit all the windows with shorter curtains that fall to or just below the window sill. If you are shopping for window treatments for a room with multiple different sized windows, we recommend, when possible, fitting all the windows with curtains of the same length. The curtains will mask the differences in size instead of drawing attention to them like curtains of different lengths would. This trick will also make the room appear larger. Another handy tip we often tell our customers, is that using floor to ceiling length curtains make a space feel larger. For homes with short ceilings, using full length window treatments can be especially useful because they create an illusion of a taller ceiling. Often, people think that floor to ceiling length curtains and drapes are only suitable for tall windows, but this is not the case. Floor length window treatments are great for any size window, and can be mounted above the top of the window, directly on the wall. The lace curtains below are a great example of a floor length covering on a smaller sized window. Another common characteristic of older homes is that they are not very airtight, and therefore often not as energy efficient. We recommend selecting window treatments that are lined, to help with this issue. Adding an extra insulating layer on your windows can make a huge difference in both the summer and winter. They will help keep in warm air in the winter, and keep in cool air in the summer. To learn more about insulating and blackout window treatments, read our blog post on the topic here. Fitting an older home with window coverings can feel like a daunting task, so we hope these tips and tricks will help you along the way.
